Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities
Everyone deserves the best possible care when facing cancer. That’s why we work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to improve health outcomes for their communities.
Meet Emma: empowering her community
Emma is the Aboriginal Cancer Care Coordinator for the Murrumbidgee Local Health District and is working to ensure First Nation people feel heard and understood.
She provides support and resources, and explains medical information in a clear way that respects culture. Emma also advocates for culturally aware healthcare staff and readily shares her deep understanding of the local community.
Her dedication creates a safe and welcoming environment, encouraging preventative health measures and early detection.
Meet Jess: bridging the gap for cancer patients
Gamillaroi woman Jess is a Cancer Navigator with Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Services. She understands the challenges faced by those diagnosed with cancer, especially those feeling isolated or without family support.
Jess provides a listening ear and helps people navigate the healthcare system. She connects people with vital services, allowing them to focus on their health.
Jess is passionate about removing the stigma around cancer in Indigenous communities. Through education and outreach, she encourages regular screenings and empowers younger generations with knowledge to reduce cancer risks.
Making a difference
Emma and Jess are true advocates for their communities. Their dedication and advocacy efforts are making a real difference in closing the gap in cancer care.
